Onboarding
Unprompted weapon throwing allows players to permanently lose critical progression tools before clearing the starting root wall.
"Oh. I just threw it away."
When first picking up the shattered blade in the cavern pool, two players pressed face buttons while testing basic movement. One player threw the knife through the root barrier gaps into the locked corridor beyond, soft-locking the run because the weapon could not be retrieved and the barrier could not be breached. The trapped player spent several minutes jumping against root walls and searching the pause menu for a restart button before quitting. Another player accidentally threw the knife into the water pool, quickly recovered it, and deliberately avoided that button for the rest of the intro.
Opening narrative pacing presented additional friction when the first spoken subtitle faded during the initial eye-opening transition, leaving one player unaware of the opening line.
Suggested change Require a deliberate two-button modifier like holding aim to throw weapons, add impassable collision for progression tools at the barrier, and provide a restart or checkpoint reload option in the pause menu.
Validation Verify that zero players throw key progression tools past barriers during initial control experimentation, and observe whether trapped states can be resolved without closing the game.
Gamepad controls
Gamepad users encounter keyboard-specific tutorials, missing consumption prompts, and modal dialogs that lock controller focus.
"That's alt, but I'm using a controller, so I don't know which one I should press."
Players who connected gamepads were repeatedly prompted with keyboard and mouse instructions. The dashing tutorial directed the player to press Alt Dash, while the inventory tutorial instructed dragging items with a mouse cursor into the hotbar.
Without an on-screen gamepad prompt indicating how to consume equipped hotbar items, one player repeatedly dropped mushrooms and swords onto the ground while trying to heal. In another session, the melee tutorial modal appeared with a controller dismiss icon but ignored all gamepad inputs until the player moved a physical mouse to click the button.
Suggested change Dynamically detect connected gamepads, display matching controller glyphs in all tutorial dialogues and HUD slots, and ensure UI modal dialogs automatically grab gamepad focus.
Validation Confirm that new gamepad users can dash, manage inventory items, eat consumables, and close tutorial popups without touching mouse or keyboard.
Save system
Ambiguous autosave locations and minimal selection contrast in the load menu cause severe progress rollbacks after defeat.
"Wait I thought I saved."
Players expected automatic checkpoints when crossing environmental thresholds, but defeat repeatedly sent them back to distant campfires or the opening cave. One player quit the session entirely after losing extensive wilderness traversal upon a second death in the upper woods.
Even when players deliberately created manual saves before crossing dangerous bridges , low visual contrast between save cards caused an older autosave to be confirmed instead of the recent quicksave, resetting the player to the campfire with starter gear.
Suggested change Add prominent selection outlines and highlight tinting to focused save cards, default cursor focus to the most recent save timestamp, and show clear on-screen notifications when passing checkpoint anchors.
Validation Track player reload accuracy after defeat to confirm players consistently load their newest save file without accidental rollback.
Combat pacing
Melee combat feels repetitive without dedicated evasion or lock-on options, compounded by rigid consumable animation locks.
"kind of feels spammy, you know? There's no lock on feature, so it's hard to like... You have to like walk around them."
Melee combat requires circling enemies through basic walking inputs, as the combat system provides neither lock-on targeting nor a dedicated dodge roll. Consuming restorative items like Moss Cap Stew locks the player into a four-second bowl-holding animation, preventing weapon switching or attacking while enemies close in.
Progression feedback in early combat is similarly disconnected. Eating blueberries increases mana before any spells or magical abilities are introduced, leaving players questioning the resource. Furthermore, reaching a level-up displays a banner but provides no skill allocation or guidance toward trainers in the character menu.
Suggested change Prototype a quick-step dodge button and evaluate soft target assist for melee swings. Allow animation canceling for consumable items via blocking or dodging, and tie mana items directly to usable spells.
Validation Evaluate combat engagement in playtests to observe whether players actively use evasive actions and recover smoothly during enemy skirmishes.
World exploration
Off-path wilderness traversal, environmental secrets, and evocative audiovisual cues create strong player interest across sessions.
"I mean I like the exploration."

Players responded very favorably to the environmental aesthetics, ambient rain audio, and character voice barks upon exiting the cavern. Leaving the main path to harvest beehives, collect hidden pies, and explore ridges was consistently cited as the highlight of the experience.
Navigational uncertainty did introduce pacing stalls when players pursued wildlife onto secondary trails, prompting remarks about getting lost and wishing for a map. Similarly, the initial objective to collect moss caps caused confusion because players did not know what visual asset to look for on tree trunks.
Suggested change Preserve open wilderness exploration while adding subtle trail waymarkers, a simple compass ribbon, and illustrative quest icons for harvestable objectives.
Validation Track navigation efficiency across wilderness trails and measure the time required for new players to locate their first moss cap.
Action items
Address critical onboarding soft-locks and controller friction first before tuning combat evasion and save clarity.
- Prevent critical progression items from passing through uncleared root barrier geometry and require a two-button aim modifier to throw weapons.
- Implement dynamic controller prompt detection and ensure tutorial popups can be dismissed with gamepad buttons without mouse movement.
- Increase visual selection contrast in the Load Game screen and default cursor focus to the most recent quicksave or autosave timestamp.
- Add a dedicated quick-step dodge button for melee combat and allow animation canceling for restorative consumable items.
- Provide illustrative quest icons for harvest objectives like moss caps and delay mana consumables until usable magic spells are unlocked.
Validation Evaluate the revised intro and first combat encounters with new cohorts across both controller and mouse-keyboard setups, confirming zero soft-locks and reduced progress loss.
